    What's Inspiring Me: DIYs!

    November 5, 2013 • 9:00 am

I often get asked where I find my inspiration for my designs - not an easy question to answer! I find my ideas and inspiration from anywhere from endless magazines and antique shopping to novels, movies, nature, architecture, and history. And of course, from other designers and homes, too! I love seeing the way another designer sees an object and how it can be refurbished, recreated, reused, and displayed. It gets those design wheels turning in my head!

One of my most beloved sources to get inspiration from other designers around the world is The Interior Collective, a ongoing collective blog by designers for designers (both professional and aspiring). One of my favourite parts of this blog is the CREATIVITY section in which designers give their insider tricks for DIYs, displays, and doing things a little outside the box.

Right now, I'm super obsessed with DIYs. Perhaps it's because the cold fall weather makes me want to cozy up inside and allow my creativity to flow in the comfort of my own home, but, regardless, the satisfaction of the creation is soooo so addicting.

I wanted to share with you a few of my favourite Interior Collective CREATIVITY posts from the past year to see if I can inspire you to take what you've already got and make it new again.

    Happy DIYing!

Designer Brittany Watson Jepson's tips are very simple and straightforward, showing you how to use items you have in your home already to create the perfect coffee table - such an art form! 8 New Ways to Use Chalkboard Paint

This is another post I love my designer Brittany. Some may think that chalkboard paint only belongs in the classroom or perhaps in the room of your little ones, but it can be so beautifully unique in a grown-up form too!! Read Brittany's ideas here.

Don't we all want to travel more?

    October 29, 2013 • 6:10 pm

A guest post from Charlie Ford Vintage

The reason for every journey is this: In a journey, discoveries are made.

This week’s theme sale is for everyone! Because, don’t we all just want to travel more?

But before we get deeper into the amazing World Traveler collection, we want to share a little insight on how we work. Here, at Charlie Ford Vintage, we don't just buy and then sell antiques. We partner with amazing antique stores across Canada and we work together to select the best on their inventory.

When we then list an item on Charlie Ford Vintage we help our parters expand their market, but most importantly WE help YOU, by taking all the guess work out of ‘antiquing’ and making it easy to own precious unique pieces. But this week we added something new & fun!

Look for this sticker to identify Jillian’s personal collection on Charlie Ford Vintage. They mark handpicked antiques from Jillian Harris personal collection as well as the highlights from her treasure hunt through Europe.

SHOP THE BLOG!  and make sure to look for Jillian's personal and fabulous travel finds.

Love It or List It Vancouver: Theresa and David

    October 8, 2013 • 2:10 pm

Did you watch Love it or List It Vancouver last night???

This was such a fun family to work with. So full of interesting aspects: the kids speak Spanish, David plays in a rock band, and their house was basically already beautifully renovated… the latter, actually, always makes it harder for me and the design team.  We love to surprise with super transformations and when the start is as good as their house was, well, we really have to work even harder!

Thankfully what they called a “master bedroom” was nothing like it so we decided to focused on it to WOW and convince the homeowners to LOVE IT. We took over the roof, gave them new extra square footage, and created a real and spectacular Master Bedroom with capital M.

I always talk about accessories, but today I will share some of my basics. Yes, accessories do A LOT, set the mood, and sell the space... but you really need to have a good canvas to start from. Here are some of my go-to items:

Nothing better than fresh clean classic WHITE. For this bedroom's walls we used Behr Polar Bear 1875 Flat Finish and for the trim, I used what I use almost all of the time: BEHR Ultra Pure White in semi gloss.

    Hardwood Floors

I try to always stay away from carpet… but I know, it is not always possible. But when it is, you should definitely do it! It's hard to go wrong with hardwood flooring - I love them all! For this project we used the fabulous Mercier Flooring.

    Upholstered Headboard

You can find some really great affordable ones of you look carefully. It's best to choose a neutral/classic colour so that you can go a little crazier with the bedding.

    Hardwired Lighting Fixtures

It’s hard to just talk about one single design I go to - so many incredible lighting designers these days! However, as a rule of thumb I tend to choose pendants or chandeliers as opposed to flush mount ceiling lights.

I added this ottoman because it is really such a fantastic little piece of furniture. I know, I know... this is more in the “accessories” category, but it is really one of my go-to pieces and I thought you’d like to know more about it :)

Check more images and “shop the show” over on W Network.

So… I am not giving it away, did Theresa and David Love It or List It??

New episodes of Love it or List It Vancouver air Monday’s at 7pm on W Network. I will be featuring my favourite rooms from the show right here.
