The 80/20 Rule! What is it?!

    June 6, 2013 • 7:57 am

It was a big step for me asking if Patricia wanted to be part of Food Fridays… my website is my baby!  So before she came on board we had a few pretty good chats and this 80/20 philosophy was what made me realize that Patricia is a perfect contributor to Food Fridays… this is exactly how I balance a healthy lifestyle too!  Have a read, it’s SUPER easy!

Oh and those ingredients in the picture above... Food Friday tomorrow!  You'll have to check back tomorrow for the recipe;)

    Patricia Chuey's 80/20 Rule:

I honestly think if you can say things are going 80% well (or better) in pretty much ANY area of life you are doing great, whether that's with healthy eating, your job, fitness, relationships… But if it gets to be 50-50, it's definitely time for a change!

The 80-20 Rule, or should I say “philosophy” as it applies to healthy eating means that if you're trying to stay healthy, improve your energy, or lose weight, if you can truly say you eat well at least 80% of the time, you'll be well on your way.

Life is short indeed! Ask any group of people what factors influence their food choices and a range of things will come up: time, convenience, mood, stress, seasonality, cost, enjoyment, celebration, comfort, family faves… Rarely does "getting the nutrients I need" top the list. In fact, taste, convenience and cost are the three big factors that top the list when this type of formal research is done.

Having assisted people with healthy living for many years, those who PERMANENTLY follow an 80-20 approach get WAY better results than those who try to eat perfectly 100% of the time. Those who get on the bandwagon and try to keep it perfect go on and off various approaches and never get permanent, satisfying results.

So, the 20% means that you allow yourself (with no guilt and hard feelings because that alters hormones that do bad things in your body) to indulge and enjoy treats like cake on your birthday, an ice cream on a summer day, a Christmas cocktail, chocolate just because you need it that particular week… wink wink…

Sometimes people ask "Does this mean I can eat really well Monday to Friday and then blow it every weekend?". Sadly, NOPE…

The concept is bigger than that. Eat a delicious and nourishing breakfast, lunch, dinner and pretty darn good snacks and beverages MOST of the time. When you do indulge, apply the "Pleasure Maximization Principle" which means to make it good and worth it. This doesn't mean binge to an extreme, but rather to make it your favourite wine or chocolate so it's REALLY worth it.

Try it!  You may never read another “dieting” article again!  My website has more information too.
