I’m constantly being asked “How can I change the look of an apartment for a homeowner on a tight budget?!?!?” Well…today is your lucky day because I am going to give you 8 super easy, budget-friendly ways to spruce up the entire look of your apartment or smaller living space!! Decor trends, like fashion, are always changing and it can be expensive to keep up! So my advice when purchasing furniture or other big ticket items is to always choose neutral, classic pieces that won’t date easily. This way you can switch up the smaller, less expensive items that surround it and keep it all cohesive.
Before we begin, I would like to share a super important tip that costs you absolutely NOTHING!!!! Ready for it??……PURGE, PURGE, PURGE….ORGANIZE, TIDY and ORGANIZE!!! Go through your space and whatever you haven’t touched or looked at in the past 6 months, recycle it, sell it or give it away! The best way to cleanse the soul is to cleanse your space!! I just made that up..but it’s kinda true, right?!?! Then you can sell house fast.
So now that we have Rule #1 out of the way, let’s get to those 8 ways to spruce up your apartment!!
1. Slap on a fresh coat of paint:
Easier said than done, I know, but paint colour can be one of the main things holding your space back…back in the 90’s!! I always say…when in doubt, paint it white! If you love a colourful space, you can still have one with white walls…but trust me, white walls will NOT go out of style. White walls are a big, bright, blank canvas for the rest of your decor!
2. Build from the ground up:
With an area rug of course!! Area rugs can be on the higher end of ‘budget-friendly’ but are a great way to change up the entire space. There are so many varieties to choose from, just be sure if you are going to spend the money, that it is classic and neutral enough to keep for a long time.
3. Throw pillows & blankets
This was also one of my tips for creating the ultimate outdoor space. This is where you can inexpensively add a new colour to your space or satisfy that new decor craving you’ve been salivating over. For example these super cute tufted chenille bolster pillows from Urban Outfitters Home.
If you weren’t already aware Urban Outfitters has some super fun home decor items for a good price. What I love the most is that they have some really unique items that you can’t find just anywhere…like these Mexican Falsa blankets. Save the trip to Mexico and grab one of these online…their prices are actually affordable!!
4. Swap out light fixtures:
Lighting can be as expensive or inexpensive as you want, there are a ton of options in this category. From your floor lamp to your bedside table lamps or your chandelier…try making a statement with these fixtures. Use metallics, accent colours or odd shapes to create a conversation piece! There are some really fun light fixtures out there that can add character to your space without breaking the bank. If you are looking for a quick and easy revamp I try to ALWAYS start with lighting.
5. Knobs, Hooks and Thing-a-ma-bobs:
These are all the smaller fixtures that nobody really pays any attention to, until you change them!! Got an old dresser? Change out the knobs, it will completely transform before your eyes! Add some amethyst or crystals to the top of a book pile or an ornamental wall hook in the kitchen or by the door. You can really get creative with all the thing-a-ma-bobs, DIY and SAVE money!
6. Freshen up the Bedding:
A super simple way to change things up in your bedroom is to get new bedding!! As you may have seen on my snapchat, Nacho loves to snuggle in bed, but he also loves to get my bedding SO dirty! If you have a similar problem, be sure to check the cleaning instructions for your bedding. If you’re going for all white, make sure you can use bleach on them! I love switching up my bedding for the different seasons and it generally only lasts a year or two before I need to get a new set! I have been SO in love with this pom fringe duvet set and can’t wait for it to arrive on my door step this summer!!!
7. Organizing Bins & Baskets:
Even after you purged and tidied, if you’re still finding you have alot of ‘stuff’ around, grab some baskets or crates to store your things. You can even find some cute laundry bags to store extra pillows and blankets in the guest room! This is a decorative way to hide your “stuff” and an inexpensive decor addition.
8. Add life to your space with PLANTS & fresh FLOWER:
You have to be careful to not overdo it with too many house plants … you only really need one large plant or two to three smaller, either bunched together or placed at different heights around your space. This is a great way to add some life and bring a bit of the outdoors, in! And for the final touch…you can never go wrong with some fresh cut flowers!
I don’t know about you but my favourite showcase prize on the Price Is Right was the year long supply of fresh flowers delivered to your door weekly. #GOALS
