Summer is here!! Well, not “officially” BUT it sure feels like it!! The other week the girls and I had a picnic in our new yard and while our yard isn’t officially finished yet, we made it work and it actually got me SO excited for the next few months of warm weather and picnics with Leo, Justin, and Nacho at our new home!!
Picnics are seriously one of my favourite things to do in the summer, whether it’s a date with your besties, you and your pup or your family … they are the perfect way to spend time catching up all while digging into some great food, vino, and making new memories in the sun!
Today I wanted to share some tips with you that you can refer back to before you head out on your first picnic this year!!
Blanket: If you don’t want to spend money on a throw blanket, OR if you can’t find one with that picture perfect print you’ve been looking for, go to a fabric store and purchase a peice of fabric that you love and use that!! That’s exactly what I did here!! I was in search of a cute gingham picnic blanket and had the toughest time finding one, so I popped by Fabricland and got to choose from a RAINBOW of gingham prints!!
Snack Foods: Picnics are supposed to be fun, easy and LIGHT (light as in more room for wine … lol!!) so make it easy on yourself and pack snacks that everyone enjoys like veggies and dip, crackers and cheese (or nut cheese, has anyone tried a good nut cheese yet?!), nuts and sliced fruit.
Pro Tip: Pre-Cut your fruit beforehand and try incorporating ready-made snacks like Naked Snacks.
Pre-Make Wraps: This is the EASIEST meal to bring with you in addition to your snacks! Pre-make a bunch of wraps before you head out for your picnic and roll them up in tinfoil so they’re easier to transport and don’t make a mess!
Pro Tip: Avoid using low-fat mayo in your wraps because it makes them watery!
Don’t Forget the Corkscrew: This speaks for itself. Nothing is worse than getting settled in your perfect picnic spot and realizing you forgot your wine corkscrew just as you are about to crack into that sweet, sweet, nectar!! Or, better yet, bring a twist off bottle!!
Pro Tip: Purchase a corkscrew that doubles as a bottle opener so you can open EVERYTHING from individual spritzers to mini champagne bottles!
Bring a Portable Speaker: There’s nothing better than sipping that vino and listening to your favourite tunes on a portable speaker with your favourite people! However, if you happen to forget your speaker, not to worry, just place your phone in an empty cup to amplify the music on your phone!
Picnic Attire: Wearing a dress seems like a good idea (and they’re damn cute) BUT personally I find it hard to sit on the ground in one so I would go for linen pants or a romper!

I bought a wine container/thermos that keeps my cold wine cold because its easier to transport than glass and keeps your wine cold which is a must for summer weather. Cheers!
What’s your favourite vegan ‘cheese’? And what was the name of the vegan online store you talked about in your insta stories the other day?
Hi Lauren!! I just wrote a blog on all of this!! LOL!! Take a look at it here https://jillianharris.com/guide-dairy-alternatives/ XOXO
Hey Jill!
I have been salivating ever since you posted about the vegan fig cheese! Can’t stop thinking about it!! Where exactly did you find it? I believe you may have posted an insta story about it, but I missed it if you did.
Thanks so much, Jill! 🙂
