5 Ways to Tackle Messy Moments in a Busy Household

Trust me … we have had our fair share of messy moments in this household … between a toddler running around (and becoming more curious by the day!) and an adventurous (dirt loving) pooch, mixed with my love for all things WHITE AND WINE, we’ve certainly had some experience when it comes to STAINS!!

Now, before I start this big “how to” on keeping your house clean, I should mention that we’re extremely lucky in the sense that Leo’s Nanny, Melissa, also doubles as our house cleaner which helps us out SO MUCH … I’m honestly not sure how we would stay on top of everything if we didn’t have her, considering Justin and I both work 2-3 jobs and our home also doubles as a studio for filming, an office for the team AND because we have a revolving door of friends and family and kids… we love to entertain! This house is always getting messy so it’s incredible to have the extra help each week! (THANK YOU, Melissa!). However, even though we have a cleaner who helps out, she’s not around 24-7 (WAHHH)!! … Actually, an unknown fact about me is that I honestly LOVE cleaning and doing laundry, when I was around 13-14 years old I started my very own business cleaning houses for people and I continued it throughout college (it’s what paid my way!). Cleaning is one of my favourite household jobs but just with the craziness of our schedules, trying to find that work/life balance and manage our time and budget … having a cleaner is what made the most sense to us so we decided to invest in one! Now, having said that, I do still have a few tricks up my sleeve when it comes to tackling messy moments and keeping on top of a busy household … and I’m going to share them with you below!

1. Slip Covers

If I could offer one piece of advice for ANY lover of white furniture … always get slipcovers. Slipcovers save my life every single time … I can’t even count the number of times I’ve spilled wine on my couch, or how many times Nacho has made himself at home on the couch with his muddy paws. As soon as stains happen, peel that slipcover off and get it in the wash!!

2. Deal with Stains Immediately

People ALWAYS ask why I continue to have white bedding, clothes, and furniture in my home … and the reason for that is (other than the fact that I simply just love white) that I love the fact that I can SEE when something is dirty … unlike darks, you never really know when it’s dirty or stained. The trick is if you notice a stain on ANYTHING deal with it immediately before it has the chance to REALLY soak in! If you have a tough stain, spot-treat it first with liquid detergent prior to washing!

3. Quick Tidy Every Night

Every night after Leo goes to bed, Justin and I spend about 10-15 minutes tidying up the house, I know it doesn’t seem like much time at all (that’s the beauty of it), but if it’s something you tackle every single night, the more “in-order” your house will become! It’s a great (and simple!) routine to get in the habit of doing!

4. Use a Powerful Detergent

On items that get the most wear and tear, like sneakers, area rugs and slipcovers we like to use a powerful detergent like Persil ProClean because we know that it’ll blast away the stains … even red wine … believe it or not! LOL!

Ps. You could WIN a year’s supply of Persil ProClean detergent PLUS a trip to (drumroll please ….) GERMANY, the home of Persil!! All you have to do to enter is share your messy moment here, and you’ll be entered for your chance to win!!

5. Just Breathe

When all else fails, just breathe … and maybe pour yourself a glass of wine. And remind yourself that you’re doing the best you can. LOL!

  1. I just invested in a good handheld vacuum and keep it within reach for quick clean-up of crumbs and things. My kids eat like Cookinr Monster!

  2. Cleaning up for 10 minutes before bed every night saved us from disappearing into a hole of mess and clutter! It definitely makes a huge difference. Also, we have a decent cordless vacuum, it’s so handy to just whip it out for a quick spot clean without the hassle of wires and plugs.
