Cozy For the Holidays

I was having a chat with my nieces (ages 7 and 4) this afternoon, and asked them “what do you love most about Christmas time?” Not surprisingly, their answers centered around receiving presents, staying home from school, and something about a Queen Elsa and her buddy Olaf.

When they asked about my favourite Christmas things, boy did a list coming pouring out. Egg nog americano mistos, watching ALL the Christmas movies while the fireplace crackles, baking, decorating, and devouring sugar cookies, and cozy Christmas fashion.

“Christmas fashion?” you ask? Yes! Every December I find myself completely obsessed with a festive trend, and I incorporate it into all of my holiday outfits. 2013 was all about sequin, 2012 was the year of velvet, and in 2011 I couldn’t get enough of Fair Isle print pieces.

While I’ve incorporated all of those trends into my going-home-for-Christmas suitcase this year, the trend I’m obsessed with this year is oversized chunky knits. This trend is perfect for heading back to my hometown for a two solid weeks of lounging around my parents house and meeting old friends for coffee. With this in mind, I filled my bags with pieces that are not only comfy and cozy, but also cute enough to be paired with some boots and a faux fur jacket so I can leave the house.

The oversized chunky knit sweater hits all of the requirements, with tons of versatility. A good chunky sweater will pair just as well with a pair of skinny jeans as it will with a sequinned skirt, a velvet dress, or a pair of thigh-high socks.

One of my favorite knits this year is the sweater dress.  Purchasing a sweater in an larger size can give the same affect as the sweater dress like I did with this soft dove grey sweater from Gap.

This sweater covers two red-hot trends this winter season: this rich shade of burgundy, and the of-the-moment turtleneck. You heard me correctly, the turtleneck is back. It’s perfect for a lazy night drinking wine at home in your leggings, or if you have to go out, pair it with a gold sequin skirt for a cute yet comfortable holiday party outfit.

My favorite way to wear this trend! Wear your oversized knit sweater with a lace skirt or dress for a little unexpected sexiness. To complete this outfit, I would pair it with over the knee boots to show just a peek of skin.
