Hi, I’m Jackie from So Bright Home and today, I’ll be teaching you how to make a DIY Air Dry Clay Valentine’s Garland, inspired by friendship bracelets! I’m a wife, mom and DIY enthusiast who believes in the power of creativity to enrich our lives. Whether it’s enjoying a craft with my children, flipping a thrifted item or renovating our home, I’m hands in, sharing all the ups and downs with you, on my social media @sobrighthome. Whether you’re looking to add a touch of love to your home decor or create a heartfelt gift, this DIY project is simple, stylish and perfect for crafters of all skill levels. Let’s get right into it!
What You’ll Need
SUPPLIES
Rolling pin
Round and heart-shaped cookie cutter
Wood skewer
Acrylic paint
Paint brush
Matte Mod Podge
Jute
3M Command Hook
Directions
- Start by rolling air dry clay onto a smooth surface. I used kraft paper and it worked well. Roll the clay until it’s about 1/8 to 1/4” thick.
- Cut heart and circle shapes out of the clay using cookie cutters. Repeat for as many shapes as you’d like. This specific garland consisted of eight hearts and four circles.
- Use a wood skewer to poke two holes in the top of each shape, about 3/4 to 1 1/4” apart.
- Dip your finger in water and smooth out the edges and top surface of each shape.
- Lay the shapes on a flat surface for 2-3 days to dry. TIP: After about 12 hours, check the holes and poke through with the wood skewer.
- Paint the top surface and edges of each shape using acrylic paint. If you’re wanting pastel colours, just add a bit of white paint to your colour and mix well. Paint the circles white and hearts colours, as desired. Let dry.
- Use a black acrylic paint marker to write letters on the white circles. Write one letter on each circle, L, O, V and E. Let dry. TIP: Write the letters lightly, in pencil first, in case you want to make any changes.
- Apply a thin coat of matte Mod Podge on the top surface and edges of each shape. Let dry.
- Arrange shapes in order of how you want your garland to be. This one is four hearts, the circles that spell LOVE, then another 4 hearts, in the opposite order.
- Cut a piece of jute about 1.5 times the length of the garland and weave it onto each shape through the holes at the top. Start by weaving the end of the garland (far right side) and working your way back to the first heart. TIP: To make it easier to weave the jute through the hole, cut it first, then twist the jute as you push it through the hole.
- Hang using 3M Command Hooks and enjoy the season of love!
