Decorating The Kelowna Nursery

With my film schedule starting back up pretty quickly after the babe is born I need to prepare and fully stock TWO nurseries … one in Kelowna and one in Vancouver that are ready to go by JULY!!!!! EEEP the pressure is on!!! Good news … I am finalizing all the details and furnishings for both!! I am starting off my nursery series by sharing my Kelowna nursery inspiration and special finds so far. I will follow up in two weeks with my Vancouver nursery as they are both different styles with entirely different decor.

I am so excited for the Kelowna nursery to come to life. I have found most of my bigger items at The Cross Decor & Design and have placed lots of orders and items are on their way. To give you an idea of what the overall theme is … I’m thinking traditional, clean, white, fresh, with a SLIGHT edge and it is of course, gender neutral. I am THINKING about adding in some pops of pastel colours here and there (like light blues and peaches) but want to keep the overall feel neutral until the babe is born!!

I have been searching AND researching high and low to get some ideas of what Justin and I want, what’s best for the babe, what works what doesn’t work … the list goes on!!! There’s so much to learn and so many products out there. You’d be surprised but Justin definitely has input into this as well!!! Here are some of my MAIN inspiration images so far ….

And now the actual ROOM!!! I quickly sketched this layout (I know it’s not anything special for all you interior designers out there … so don’t judge lol) but it includes the crib (possibly in the middle of the room), a large dresser, a narrow bookshelf, and a rocker station in the corner.

On to the FUN stuff … the decor!!! I am sourcing the majority of my items from The Cross Decor in Vancouver. I have included everything that I have ordered or am thinking about ordering in the round up below. As you can see I am keeping it gender neutral and am adding layers of different textures to give the room some depth and a warm and cozy feel …

Kelowna Nursery

1. Pendant Light | 2. Bunny Picture | 3. Minimocs | 4. Area Rug | 5. Dresser | 6. Juju Wall Hanging | 7. Bunny Lamp | 8. Open Book Shelf | 9. Crib | 10. Stump

A few other things that I’ve been thinking about …

  • Window Coverings – I am thinking about getting drapes made by Q Design … but I might just stick with putting them in the Vancouver nursery!!!
  • Glider – I have ordered my glider from Wayfair … Check it out!!!! What do you think!?
  • Flooring – this will stay the same and as you can see I am just getting a large area rug from The Cross
  • Walls – I am thinking about covering them in wainscotting with a light paint colour … of course lol
  • Large Leaning Mirror – still trying to decide on this
  • Wallpaper – eeep I said it … I’m still not sure but am looking at Milton & King!!!

Well I think that wraps up my Kelowna Nursery!!! I will make sure to fill you in with some pictures as it all starts to come together … I am getting SO SO SO excited to meet this little bean growing inside of me and hang out with her/him in this gorgeous little sanctuary!!

If you have any questions … let me know in the comments below …

  1. Amazing! Great ideas Jillian, so beautiful and unique. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself to get everything ready before he/she arrives, we did that and were laughing later because our little one stayed next to our bed in a Halo bassinest for 6 months before we even used the nursery! Enjoy every moment of planning, it is so fun!

    1. Agree with you! For the first several months you’re nursing basically every few hours so ideal to have baby close to you (plus you’ll be paranoid like any new mom if the baby is breathing etc.!).

      1. I totally agree. We co-slept and it was my saving grace when babe was up so often. Didn’t need to go far at all. One good thing about doing the nursery though is the nesting process, even if you don’t really use it.

        1. Good point, I looooove the nesting process. And now I want to do it all over again after this inspiring nursery post!

  2. Love your ideas Jillian! I added a stump to my daughter’s nursery as well (part of my forest animal theme) and used it as a side table next to my glider – so functional! My favourite piece though is my Reiner’s white polar bear ottoman, so well made and very Canadian! 🙂 So excited for you, motherhood is amazing!! 🙂

  3. Hey Jillian! I love following you during your pregnancy as I am due two months after you and so many things you discuss on IG and in your blog I can relate to !!! I wanted to just let you know that if you’re thinking wallpaper I am doing an accent wall and used Spoonflower to find the perfect design! So many to choose from and you can get matching fabric or gift wrap too ! Check out the company I’ve had great luck 🙂 xoxoxo

  4. Gorgeous! Love all of your designs! What’s a good light colour for the walls? I am looking for something. What’s your bedroom wall colour? It looks like the perfect shade in all of the pics you post.

  5. I just ordered the rabbit pictures as well in the 18×24. Do you know where you can get gold frames like the ones shown?

  6. Jillian, so glad that you are feeling so great and looking so well during your pregnancy. Yes!
Now for “no’s”: the bookcase as pictured and a leaning mirror. Unsafe.
Possibly a leaning mirror that is bolted to the wall. That still leaves edges and an angled surface that baby will be crawling around and pulling up on and later toddling around on. Babies spend time standing, pushing their “walkers” , and “walking” before they walk “hands free”. This is before they are 12 mos. and naturally unsteady. Leaning and pulling up on the shelves and bookcase is a safety issue, too. You did mention a low bookcase in your post. Should be very sturdy and bottom heavy. A bookcase is easier to bolt to the wall if necessary. My nephew tried to climb shelves!
I offer my comments in a spirit of goodwill and I hope that comes across. All the best!

  7. Absolutely love the pictures, the bear and rabbit are adorable. Love all the other choices with the exception of the bookcase. Have to agree with Libby, it’s too dangerous. Please consider a lower bookcase that if the babe turns out to be a climber you can bolt it to the wall.

  8. No leaning mirror. Not safe with a crawler. Same for bookcase.
I already posted about the mattress so just a reminder to research. New research shows that SIDS comes from the offgases in the mattress combined with a toxic fungus inside… Go wool or new open sided mattress..

  9. Also – babies sleep anywhere, light noise is not a factor. If the room is not full sun you can use light curtains or just a blind with no cords. Blackouts not necessary. It makes it easier to go anywhere with them and know they will sleep well!

  10. Oh gosh, the leaning mirror and bookcase are totally fine until he/she crawls. And if the bookcase is secured to the wall it’s fine. Jillian designs for a living, she often has to apply for permits etc when she renovates, she’s a smart girl people!

  11. i have bookcase and a leaning mirror in my house. just as log as you secure it, you’ll be fine! it all depends on the baby, my first never tried to climb anything…my second little man has no fear, but i’ve got them secured to the wall anyway! just use common sense and you’ll be fine.

  12. The ideas for the nursery are lovely. If I had to redesign my little guy’s nursery, I would add a couch. Later on when you can nurse lying down, it’s so lovely to have somewhere comfy in the baby’s room to nurse or snooze.

  13. Remember…. babies are messy…. 🙂 When baby starts solids…. woooo the stains! Have some non-white back ups ready!

  14. Get a daybed, or something you can sleep on. There will be SO man nights when you will just need to be in there with your little bean while he/she is sleeping in the crib. Hands down my biggest piece of advice to new mums planning nurseries – make sure there is a place for your to sleep. Good luck mama! The nursery looks perfectly Jillian and I can’t wait to see the finished room.

  15. One more thing Jillian, people in general try to make you crazy about safety…they need to chill. Obviously you are an intelligent human being with a good head on your shoulders. You will keep your baby safe and figure things out along the way. There is nothing wrong with having a bookcase, just secure it to the wall. Leaning mirror…again, just make sure it’s secured to the wall somehow and things will be fine – babies love mirrors and being able to sit in front of one and stare at themselves. Do what you think is best for you and your family. Enjoy this exciting time of preparing for your first baby, it’s very special. Every single mum giving you advice, went through exactly what you are going through and figured it out without a million people shouting safety advice at them 😉

  16. Jillian you’re so talented and your designs are beautiful but I find it discouraging that some of the pieces are so unaffordable for the average person ($385 for a stump)..yikes.

  17. Hi Jillian,

Where is the bunny lamp from? I’m doing a neutral bunny nursery (greys/whites), and finding it very difficult to find cute bunny accents!

    Thanks,
    Amy
