DIY Refreshing Rosewater Face Mist

For those of you who know me, you’ll know that I go bananas over face mists! They are something I have always had on hand for a quick spritz to keep me feeling fresh throughout the day. Not only do I use them throughout the day but they are also great to have on hand for travel, post-workout, or right before going to sleep. Face mists are life. In my world. LOL!!

Normally when I’m doing some online shopping I find myself stumbling across face mists and they somehow always end up in my shopping cart (strange how that happens!! LOL!) … a few of the culprits are below … LOL …

However, lately I’ve been on the DIY train and the girls and I are always brainstorming ways to replicate the things I love at a lower cost, like my Everyday Invigorating Body Scrub, for example. Welp, while I was away, Mackenzie (knowing my love for rose water face mists), whipped up a DIY Refreshing Rosewater Face Mist and it was waiting for me upon my arrival back home from Mexico (along with some frickin UNREAL vegan cookies … this recipe coming soon!!) … I tested it out … and fell in LOVE with it and I knew we HAD to share it with you!!

Rose water has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the redness of irritated skin, help to get rid of acne, dermatitis, and eczema. It helps maintain the skin’s pH balance, and also controls excess oil. It hydrates and moisturizes giving your skin a refreshed look (there are seriously SO many benefits) … and not only is rosewater so luxurious … while buying face mists is convenient … making it at home is surprisingly easy and a fraction of the cost! Plus, they make the CUTEST little gifts for the holidays! I don’t think you need any more convincing, do you?? LOL … let’s get to the deets!

Jillian Harris DIY Rosewater Face Mist

DIY Refreshing Rosewater Face Mist

This recipe makes enough for about 8 small bottles of face mist!

You’ll need:

  • 7 Roses
  • Filtered Water
  • 6-8 Small Spray Bottles (this recipe makes almost 1L of rose water!)
  • Essential Oil of your choice (optional – we used lavender!)
  • Ribbon and Tags (if you plan on gifting!)

Instructions:

  1. Start by taking the petals off each rose. An easy way to do this is to hold the base of the petals and carefully tear the stem off. The petals should separate easily.
  2. Place petals in a large pot and cover with filtered water. Only add enough water to cover the roses. Press gently on the rose petals to submerge them.
  3. Turn stove to medium heat and bring to a boil. Cover the pot and let simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the petals have fully lost their colour.
  4. Place the strainer over a large bowl and pour rose water into the strainer. Cover rose water and let cool.
  5. To assemble face mists, add 1 oz rose water for every 3 oz water to spray bottle. Add 2-3 drops of your favourite essential oil and screw on lid. Shake to distribute to the oil and mix the rose water.
  6. Add hand-written tag or ribbon if gifting.

A few tips:

  • Make sure you use FRESH roses. The first two trials I did I used roses that had a few petals that were starting to die, and when I made the rose water the water turned yellow and smelled awful. Be sure to use the roses the day you buy them and ensure they are in good condition when purchasing.
  • You can use red, white or pink roses. I preferred the red roses as they created the most beautiful coloured water.
  • Ensure you only use enough water to cover the roses. Any more and you’ll dilute the rose water and compromise it! Some florists sell bags of rose petals!

What do you think?? Will you give this a try?? Let us know in the comments section below!

  2. I’m not a very good DIY’er but this I could do! I’m definitely going to give this a go for some Xmas gifts for a few friends and family this year. Looks simple enough. Thanks for the recipe Jillian. Wish me luck!!! ?? lol

    1. It should last about one month … you don’t need to store it in the fridge but I DO love storing mine in the fridge because it feels EXTRA refreshing when it’s chilled!! XOXO

  3. You posted the best insta story today. At the end pic with Leo’s adorable jacket…I didn’t see a link for the shoes you had on….I love them! I love watching your stories and posts…but I’m loving those shoes more!!! I need them ?

  4. I’m going to make it this weekend! Would be cheaper to make it in the summer I bet (cost of the roses), but it’s xmas.

    1. Hi Jillian…

Wondering if you can make these right away?
Will they last to give as Xmas gifts if I make them now?

      Thanks Evelyn

  5. Totally addicted to Rose Water Face Mist?
I spray it on like a dozen times a day.
Definately going to try this DIY.
True Aromatherapy Products T.A.P in Fort Langley makes a Lovely Rose Mist.
Olivine Love & Roses is AMAZING too!!

  6. I needed something else to make for the women in my life for Christmas. Totally going to give this a try. Thanks for sharing

  7. Maybe I could do this. Once I watched a video on YouTube, and the girl used an Italian coffee maker to make rose water.
Thanks for this recipe. Greetings from Spain.

  8. Such a great idea. I’m usually not very good at the DIY but this looks somewhat easy. Thanks for sharing Jillian. Perfect for the holidays!

  9. Great idea! But important note- use organic roses if you can find them!! Normal roses are COVERED in pesticides, preservatives, and all kinds of nasty stuff that you probably don’t want on your skin. Seriously- I’ve visited a few rose ‘factories’ and they dip each rose in several different vats of chemicals! Yuk! Just something to keep in mind 🙂

      1. Thanks Jillian!!
Love this idea for Christmas gifts! Plan to try it out today.
Please keep posting these DIY ideas ?

  10. JUST finished making this! Instagram storied during the DYI (so many friends interested)… what a fun and quick little project! I found small glass spray bottles off of Amazon. Perfect for a unique Christmas gift for the ladies in your life. Thanks, Jill!!

  11. Thanks for this recipe, Jillian! Made these last night and they turned out amazing. I found the perfect bottles at the dollar store (travel pack empty containers). You are so right about ensuring the roses are fresh – it makes a huge difference.

  12. Making this tonight- my tiny bottles finally arrived from Amazon! I bought distilled water but then re-read the directions to see it calls for filtered… Would the water from my Brita be better then distilled?

  13. Hey! So I JUST made this Rosewater.. and it does NOT smell …”rosey” LOL! I used fresh roses I bought this evening from Whole Foods, the color is gorgeous but the smell I just dont know !! Maybe it will improve after it cools??? + the Lavender oil? I try to be DIY but something ALWAYS goes wrong LOLL.
    Any tips would be fabbbbb

  14. Hi Jilly, I’m excited to make this for my family and friends! I also thought about adding some aloe vera or whitch hazel for my friends with troubled skin. What do you think?

  15. Thank you so much! I’ve been looking for something that will naturally moisturize my face. Specially in winter. I’m definitely going to try this.

  16. Use caution when making this with imported, store bought roses. They are most times treated with all kinds of pesticides, and then sprayed with chemicals to keep them fresh during transport. Probably don’t want most of that stuff soaking into your skin!!!! Buying local organically grown or forage wild roses is much safer.

  17. I used pink flowers and the water was not even close to a pink hue. How did yours turn out pink/red?

  18. I made this and LOVE IT…but does it really only last a month? Is it harmful after a month, lose smell, or its health benefits?? I’m wanting to give some to friends…from a batch I made several weeks ago but if it only lasts a month I hate to give them a product they only have ten days to use!
