Heart Shaped Chocolate Bombs

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! It’s Izabela from The Cake Mama back again to share a super fun and popular DIY: The Hot Chocolate Bomb! Since we’re celebrating love, I figured creating heart-shaped hot chocolate bombs would be the obvious choice! These have been all the rage since last year and I’m going to show you how easy it is to create at home. If you missed my last post, how to decorate sugar cookies, be sure to check it out here!

In this post, I’ll be sharing the vegan version but if you’re not avoiding dairy, you can simply use the dairy counterparts for this recipe. I prefer to use dark Belgian chocolate melting wafers which you can find at most bulk sections or bulk specialty stores. This also offsets the sweetness of the hot chocolate mix (which we also make from scratch!) and whatever else you choose to fill your bombs with.

DIY Vegan Hot Chocolate Bomb Recipe

Here’s what you’ll need for this DIY:

– A heart shaped silicon mold (or any shape!)

Chocolate melting wafers

Marshmallows (optional)

A synthetic brush

– Hot chocolate mix (recipe below!)

Let’s get started!

Ingredients

  • For the chocolate shells:
  • 2 cups 2 dark chocolate melting wafers, melted

  • For the hot chocolate mix:
  • 1/4 cup 1/4 cocoa

  • 1/2 cup 1/2 sugar

  • 1/2 cup 1/2 marshmallows

  • Sprinkles (optional)

Directions

  • Melt your chocolate. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate wafers using a microwave in 30-second intervals. Be sure to stir the chocolate after every 30 seconds to ensure no hot spots and an even melt.
  • Brush chocolate into the silicone mold. Spoon about a tablespoon of melted chocolate (just do one at a time so it doesn’t start to harden!) and use a synthetic brush to spread the chocolate to cover the entire mold. You’re going to do this step twice, (after each freeze) ensuring that the sides are well covered so that they don’t end up cracking when you go to remove the chocolate from the mold. We’re just looking to create a chocolate shell, so be sure there isn’t too much chocolate forming a puddle at the bottom of the mold.
  • Let’s freeze! Place the mold in the freezer for about 5-10 minutes. Then repeat step 2 focusing mainly on the sides of the mold but also check to see if there are any exposed silicon parts you may have missed the first time. Then freeze again.
  • Fill them up! Now your shells are ready to fill with hot chocolate mix and whatever fun surprises you’d like to include. First remove the one half that will become the “lid” of the bomb, place those on a plate and pop them back in the freezer. Use about 1.5 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix and then top with marshmallows pressing them down a bit and making sure the edges are clear of any powder.
  • Seal the hot chocolate bomb. Take your melted chocolate and the brush and paint the edge of the half that is filled with the hot chocolate mix. This is going to be the glue for your “lid”. Take a “lid” from the freezer and place it quickly over the base making sure that all sides are touching. Repeat with the rest of the bombs and pop into the freezer for its final set!
  • Now that you’re done you can enjoy the fruits of your labour! Simply warm up 1 cup of milk of your choice, place a bomb in a heat-safe mug, pour the milk over and watch your bomb magically melt and reveal a fun surprise!

  1. Such a fun activity turned into afternoon snack. Just need to work on the finesse of sealing both halves together, so it doesn’t look like my 2 1/2 year old put them together. (I guess I’ll need to make more to keep practicing. 🙂 )
    Thank you for sharing!!
