Home Tour Series: Rumpus Room

Our previous home only had one floor which is great but I was really excited to finally have a basement in our new home. I find basements can be so cozy, they are the perfect space to curl up, turn the fireplace on and watch a marathon of movies. Leo’s playroom is directly adjacent to our rumpus room which is perfect for confining most of his toys in one area.

We can also access the pool from our rumpus room through the glass sliding doors from Plygem which are next to our couch. While this space doesn’t get used THAT MUCH at the moment, I’m really hoping as the kids get older, that this will be a place they will use regularly, especially during the summer months!

I also love the fact that we have a separate TV area down in our rumpus room, this space is perfect for the guys to take over during the holidays. I love the hustle and bustle of the holidays but when we are trying to cook up our family meal and the boys have an action-packed movie blaring in the living room it starts to stress me out, so we kick ’em to the basement where they can enjoy their movie and we can cook in peace and quiet! LOL!

When I started designing this space I really wanted something that was different from the rest of the house … I wanted it to be a little bit of a “man cave” but still timeless and classy. You’ll notice that I introduced some darker elements into this space such as our Charlotte sectional from Lee Industries, which we got from CF Interiors! This couch is so comfortable and the best part is it’s made with faux down! I decided to go with the colour Lapis Blue considering this will be the main “play area” for the kiddos and the darker colour will be better at hiding at stains!!

You’ll also notice that I went with the Charcoal Chateau Mantel from Dreamcast! Crazy right?! SO many people were shocked at this decision but I really wanted something that was unique to the space … I wanted it to be dark and cozy and finally move away from the typical white that I would normally go for! Dreamcast actually resized the mantel for me to fit the space! The depth is 12″ to protect the TV from the heat of the gas unit!

When it comes to our built-ins, I was so inspired by an image from Gillian Siegel Design (I’ve shared it below!), her style is generally more modern but I LOVED the built-in’s she featured in this space so I knew I wanted something similar in our rumpus room. Clarice Maidment from Home Image interiors and the team at Kelowna Innovative Cabinets were able to bring this inspo to reality and I’m so happy with how they turned out!

I love the fact that they display our momentous from our travels along with doubling as a place to store fuzzy blankets for cozy movie nights! Also, I LOVE the big drawers in these built-ins along with the drawer pulls which are the Vinci cup pulls in black bronze from Schaub! The drawers are perfect for storing items that you don’t necessarily want to see, such as remotes, extension cords, batteries, games, cards, etc. Everything is nicely tucked away!!

The potlights in our rumpus room are all from Sylvania but how about the beauty nautical sconces above each of the built-ins?! These babies are from Wayfair!! I feel as though they match this space and our decor so much! I love the rustic charm they give off!

The rug in this space is from Caitlin Wilson, the pillows on the couch are from The Cross Decor & Design, Arianna Belle, and Cloth & Main! Oh, and the storage bench is from Wayfair!!

Our ceilings in the rumpus room are only 8 feet high and I REALLY wanted them coffered with tongue and groove centers from Woodtone … and our contractor tried telling me that our ceilings were too low to do this … buttt I had them do it anyway and I think they look AMAZING!! Our flooring is the same as it is throughout the house, which is Cinder by PurParket and the walls are painted Cloud Cover by Benjamin Moore.

On the far end of the rumpus room at the back we I have created a gallery wall that features some of my favourite art and photographs! I also have a couple of wingback chairs from Restoration Hardware that comes in handy for extra seating during those movie nights!

  1. Love this space, bright but cozy!! I’ve never heard a family room be called a Rumpus Room before! Is that just your term for it, or is that an official name!? Either way, I like it!

  2. Nice and cozy. It is nice and inviting, I would love to come over and watch TV in your rumpus room, and I love that you call it a rumpus room, you don’t hear that saying much anymore.

  3. Question: what’s the significance of the wine cork that is in a shadow box/frame?
How fun! I definitely noticed the more masculine vibe, while still being bright and comfy for family.

    1. Hi Jillian, I would also love to know what paint colour you used for the trim, ceiling and cabinets?
We are thinking of using Cloud Cover in our new home for the walls and would love a suggestion for the trim colour ?
      Thank you!

  4. Do you have a post about mapping out a gallery wall? This one is incredible! If not, I would love to see one in the future 🙂

    Thanks!

  5. Still trying to find the spot on the blog where it indicates where your drapery hardware is in your main livingspace. I know the drapes are from Q design but wondering where the rods are from. Thanks!

  6. Jillian. I’ve been eagerly reading your home Reno blog as I’m about to embark on a reno of the main level of our home. I love your attention to detail – thanks so much for sharing. I am wondering about your hardwood floor choices. Would you choose the same floor all over again? What are your suggestions for maintaining a timeless wood floor for many years to come? I’m looking at wide plank, matte finish but there are so many choices I feel completely overwhelmed.

  7. Given the warm tones in your rumpus room (basement), curious if your potlights are 3000K or 4000K. Thank you
