On Love it or List it Vancouver we do a lot of family-oriented living rooms – we aim for rooms that look great but also function for lively families with small children. Storage is key to any space but it’s critical to a room that needs to work for both children and adults – toys and art supplies need to have a dedicated home in order to have a fighting chance against the clutter! Also, seating is king – you’ll never enjoy the space as a whole family if you can’t all fit on the couch to watch a movie so the sectional is king! Take a look at the following selection of Season 2 living rooms that work as stylish adult spaces but can also play tough with kids.
With Neena & Jag we wanted to keep the space light and bright and soft so we gave them as large a sectional as possible but kept it a lighter colour. The rooms’ colour scheme of light shades of creams and white with blush and gold accents keeps things looking fresh and airy.
In this particular room we also had the pleasure of creating more seating with the addition of a window seat in an already existing bay window – a great modern fabric as the custom upholstered seat topped off with a variety of playful but light and bright toss cushions makes for a great spot for kids to gather on a board game as well as adult friends to sit with a cup of tea.
You’re only fight against clutter in any space is storage and this room has some capacity under the custom window seat as well as the large dresser. Kids can access both these areas…. which means they can also put their toys away – one hopes!
And a lovely little chair and table create a comfortable spot for reading a book next to the fireplace – perfect for a Sunday morning alone while the kids are off on a play date!
With Michelle & Brent we had a small space to work with but in an open-concept area so it was important to define the “living room” space somehow – we chose to do this by doing a coffered ceiling detail over the sectional and immediate area to add intimacy to the space.
Again, to add give more seating and to add interest to a corner, we opted for an occasional chair and table for a removed seating area. Tucking a pouf under the console allows for a little extra seating for larger gatherings.
In this case we had a family with older kids so storage wasn’t as critical but the open console still gives you a place to house some books, baskets and what not so as to not clutter the coffee table.
For Liza & Shawn we gave them a GIANT sectional for the whole family to cozy up on – and topped it all off with a coffee table / extra seating that was custom made by Shilo Living. Not only is this coffee table safe for the kids to tumble around on as it doesn’t have any sharp corners but it’s comfy and stylish to boot!
As for storage we designed a custom TV console with plenty of closed storage space and also provided this fun cart on wheels that the kids can access all their art supplies and toys from with ease.
A big thank you as always to Janis Nicolay for the gorgeous photos!!
