I’ve always loved this long weekend because it means sunshine and warmer weather are on the horizon … it’s ALMOST summer!! I’m just dreaming of relaxing around the pool this summer with some of these babies chillin’ in my drink!! Ok, ok … while I do that, I’ll let Erin take it from here …
Hi again!! Erin here! It’s finally the season where I’m all about flowers everywhere! Sum, sum, summatime! In my ideal world, I would incorporate flowers into EVERYTHING, no matter the season… Yes, even in my drinks, or more specifically, my ice! These pretty ice cubes cool down your bevvie, and leave floating blooms in your drink when they melt. How pretty would these be in rosé… or am I the only one to put ice in my rosé?! OK, water then? Or cocktails? Maybe I’m just thirsty! Haha.
I love this idea for summer entertaining (next level backyard BBQ anyone??), and the whole process is pretty easy, but there are a few secrets to getting the best outcome.
The blooms I used are for decorative purposes only but here is a list of all the edible flowers you can keep on hand when you try this quick kitchen DIY.
How to make floral ice cubes:
The more crystal clear your ice cubes, the more blooms will show through the ice! Using tap water is fine, too, but your cubes will be a bit less cloudy and extra sparkly in your drink if you follow a few easy steps.
- Start with bottled water in your kettle and boil the water twice, letting the water cool between boils. Let it cool one final time before you use it!
- Size matters here; small blooms work best (I got mine from Celsia!), so clip them off the stem, and run under water to clean them up a bit. Place the blooms in your ice cube tray, and pour the boiled water (brought down to room temperature) on top of your flowers in the ice cube tray. The flowers will float, so use a toothpick to turn them right side up if they flip upside down.
- Allow to set overnight, but leaving them frozen too long will discolour the flowers, so use them within 24 hours if you can! It’s an excuse for a cocktail, just sayin’!
