Home Tour Series: Master Ensuite

Last week we shared details on Leo’s bathroom and bedroom (if you missed it, check it out here … it’s pretty darn cute!) so this week we thought it was only fair to take you on a tour of OUR ensuite!! This space feels like what dreams are made of. It’s where I feel like I can just mellow out, whether it’s drawing myself a candlelit bath or hopping in the shower for a scrub and steam … this is the space I feel the most at ease, almost like I’m in a spa somewhere far away on vacation.

There’s really not much I would consider changing in our ensuite, other than a couple of minor things. In our old bathroom (in our previous home), our closet was in the bathroom, which sounds strange but I thought it was the best thing ever! I loved the fact that we could keep the mess limited to one area. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining about how our bathroom is now, I just think if we were to build a house that I would keep the closest in the bathroom or at least have them connected!

The other minor detail I miss is having an island in our bathroom (that damn Tori has one!! lol), this is another feature we had in our last house and I fell in love with it because it was a great area to keep my perfume, candles, and flowers without cluttering up our countertop! However, I absolutely love my bathroom the way it is and couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

Ps. We used the paint Classic Grey by Benjamin Moore in this space, it’s slightly darker than the cloud cover that we have in all of the other rooms in the house!

One of the many things I love about our ensuite is the fact that there’s a TON of storage!! Clarice from Home Image Interiors helped with the design of this and I have to admit, she’s a bit of a genius (for more than one reason!). I would totally recommend installing lots of cupboards for all of your items or do a linen tower like mine, it’s a total game changer! The fine folks at Kelowna Innovative Cabinets worked hard to install the cabinets and the linen tower in our bathroom and they also provided crown for all of our ensuite so that the entire room had the same crown as the linen tower cabinetry!

If you take a look at the linen tower you’ll notice that there are enclosed drawers, this is where I keep my hair tools, my makeup, and most of my toiletries … and then there is the area of the linen tower that is exposed behind the glass doors, this area is mainly for display purposes! This is where I like to store my Chelsea King scrunchies in a nice glass container and anything else that I feel is pretty … including bath soaks, candles, flowers, and my nice white fluffy towels. In fact, I had to put a note in between these towels so Justin stopped using them because he kept making them dirty when he has his own towels to use!! LOL!! Boys will be boys … am I right?! LOL!

The sinks and the shower are from Kohler. The steam shower was actually something that Justin and I argued about because he thought I wasn’t going to use and it that it’s bad on energy and while the latter might be true … I actually LOVE using the steam shower and frequently enjoyed it when I wasn’t pregnant. One of my favourite things to do after a busy day is to have a nice long steam to calm my nervous system. By adding some essential oils, eucalyptus, or a good scrub and listening to the sound of the steam, it immediately feels like you are in a high-end spa.

One thing I will mention here if you are building a house, don’t forget to put a niche in your shower! Whenever I designed bathrooms this was often times something I would forget in the shower and it sort of makes or breaks the experience, it’s so handy to have your shampoo and conditioner easily accessible and at a comfortable height.

I was worried mixing the tiles and the marble in this space as one has a warm tone and the other has a cool tone … you’ll come to notice that most European marbles are warm and standard marble is cool and most people don’t tend to mix and match but I ended up loving the balance of the two together. The subway and penny round tiles in this space are both from Olympia Tile and Stone and the countertops are 5141 Frosty Carrina from Caesarstone. The thing I love the most about Caesarstone quartz countertops is not only how beautiful they are, but, also that they’re seriously durable and heat resistant!

In addition to the steam shower (and before I got pregnant!) one of my other favourite things to do was to pour myself a glass of wine, turn on some music, add in some Saje bath salts and just let the day melt away as I turned into a raisin in the tub. LOL! I’m really looking forward to getting back into the habit of nightly baths soon and have my new little babe join me!! OMG, so crazy to think about!

When I was picking out which tub I wanted to go with, I didn’t measure the area where the tub was going, I just found one I liked and ordered it only to find out that the one I went with was MASSIVE. It was SO massive that our plumber told us that our hot water tank wouldn’t even be able to fill it. So, I ended up selling it as it would have cost an arm and a leg to ship back and I then ordered a claw foot tub … which then turned out to be too SMALL for our ensuite. This is turning into the home renovation version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, isn’t it?!

Welp. You’re probably wondering why I never bothered to take the dimensions and save myself all of the headaches, right?? At that time I was driving back and forth to Vancouver, filming Jillian and Justin and just had Leo so … needless to say, I just didn’t bother. LOL!! Like Justin says, “The lazy man works the hardest” LOL!! So, after being down two tubs and trying pretty much every tub that I liked from Kohler, I decided to look on Wayfair and that’s where I found the soaker of my dreams … and it was juuust right!! LOL!! Actually, funny enough, I originally found a photo of this soaker on Pinterest (1st photo below!) and had pinned it to my new house inspo board, below is the image I had saved!

Ps. Can we chat about the chandelier over the tub for a quick minute (this is from Visual Comfort for those wondering!)?? LOL! I love it to bits but the only thing that was hard about this decision was the fact that there’s a decorative light fixture in my closet, bedroom and our ensuite and I’m not a fan of too many decorative light fixtures in such a small area. So, I wanted to make sure they complimented each other. When we do the master bedroom tour, you will see that even though the fixtures are from different manufacturers the closet light fixture compliments the ensuite light fixture. I should also mention here that all of the lighting in this space is from Sylvania!

Even though the flooring (from Olympia Tile & Stone) in our bathroom is light, I’m surprised how well it hides dirt and my dark hair, it’s always a win when you don’t feel like you need to be cleaning your floors every day! LOL! Our floors in the bathroom are heated thanks to the team at NuHeat … there’s really nothing better than stepping out of a shower or bath onto a warm floor … or the feel of heated floors in the morning when you first roll out bed. The doors and windows in this space are from Plygem and the hardware on our cabinets and drawers are the Alexander Pulls in polished nickel from Emtek! The millwork and paneling (including the amazing medallion above the tub!) is thanks to Metrie!

The beautiful white drapes in this space were made by Q Design Centre, we have these throughout our home and I’m obsessed with them as they’re such amazing quality! I know that some of you will ask where the mirrors are from in our ensuite and these are actually from HomeSense! I found them for around $30 each!! The original mirrors I wanted for this space were from Pottery Barn, they came on brackets in silver and gold but every time I went to order them, they were on backorder so I originally went to HomeSense to look for temporary mirrors but fell in love with the ones I found and I don’t intend on swapping them out anymore!!

There you have it!! I hope you have enjoyed this little tour!! Make sure to swing back next week as I will take you through our MASTER BEDROOM!!

  2. Well the tub you ended up with is gorgeous, so it was worth it! I’ve never had a steam shower, is that the reason why the ceiling of the shower is tiled? I found that part to be really interesting.

  3. Where is the exact wall sconce from? The one on Wayfair looks different.. thanks so much! Love the space 🙂

  7. Just wondering is it a pocket door from your room to bathroom? And what color is the bathroom painted? Just about to start a bathroom Reno and love this

  8. Beautiful space!!! I love the combo of both the warm and cool toned tiles and adore the light fixture above your tub. Wondering what the specific BM wall colour is??

  9. Hey Jilly! can you tell me where the bath caddy is from? I like the metal arms. I haven’t found one similar yet

  10. Gorgeous! I kept waiting for you to say where you got that amazing rug though! Care to share??

  11. There’s nothing better than to have an ensuite to relax in after a long hard day! You’ve definitely achieved that, it’s gorgeous! Love every bit of it and it gives me ideas for my next one.

  12. Hi Jillian

Love your master bathroom! Where did you buy the little stool from in your bathroom?

    Thks
    Brenda

  13. Your bathroom is gorgeous! I love everything about it. My daughter is renovating her en suite soon & you’ve given her some fabulous design ideas. I could use that bathroom rug in my bathroom. I can’t seem to find it on that website. Can you tell me the name or send me more info please.

  14. Beautiful, Jillian! ABSOLUTELY. BEAUTIFUL!
Would you mind sharing the dimensions of the vanity and storage unit?

  15. Beautiful, Jillian. ABSOLUTELY. BEAUTIFUL!!!
Would you mind sharing the dimensions of the vanity and the linen tower?

  16. LOVE this bathroom.

The rug is exactly what I’ve been searching for! I don’t see it on The Cross website. Was it purchased a while ago? Thanks!

  17. Your bathroom is so dreamy! I love all the cabinets and display doors! The mirrors are stunning and everything about this is beautiful! Xox

  18. Love love love all your design choices; most of all love how ‘real’ you are.
We are in need of redesigning:
    – a good size space for an ensuite but so lacking in design and function ( tiny shower – a lot of wasted space )
    – laundry room ( currently a squeeze of walk through from the garage ( think mayyybe able to take space from the
    – back deck ( small and 12 yrs old ) like to somehow take better advantage of amazing green space view w sunsets
We’ve always thoroughly enjoyed your love it or list it show and while I understand you’re not doing that anymore – do you do design work for people separate from that?
Been thinking about how to find out for a while now and finally google and found your website and this ( hope the right way to try and contact regarding this )

  19. I think we need a whole blog post about the steam shower. SO dreamy and I need to know more. Things to consider, best parts, possible drawbacks. Such a wonderful place to decompress. Thanks for sharing.

  20. It is a pretty space and I’m so happy you’re enjoying it. I do have two questions: 1) why doesn’t your vanity extend to the tiled half-wall of your shower? In the photos that void looks awkward (where you have your robe hanging). 2) Why did you choose to not have a water closet, or at least some sort of partition for your toilet? My husband and I actually have separate bathrooms but even in them, we have completely enclosed water closets and LOVE them. Love them.

  21. Hi Jillian, Absolutely love your style. Can you please tell me where you found the bathroom stool that is showing in your master bathroom.

  22. Gorgeous bathroom. I’m with you on crating a niche in the shower for your shampoo and bath stuff. Would you mind sharing where you got the book stand on the bathtub? I might take more baths if I didn’t have to get my book wet.

    1. I believe I got that one from HomeSense but you can find them online as well!! Maybe check Wayfair!!

  23. Love love love your bedroom and your master ensuite! Where did you find the cute little white washed stool beside the tub? It’s perfect! Did you have this custom made? Thanks. xo

  24. Hi Jillian,

I love love love your ensuite! We are in the process of building and I was wondering what the name is for the floor and shower tiles from Olympia?

  25. Hey J,
Absolutely love the little stool by the bathtub in your master-ensuite bathroom. Sorry to keep asking but wondering where the little stool by the bathtub is from??? I would love to purchase this!
    hugs
    Brenda

  26. Everything looks so beautiful! Where did you find the cute little bathroom stool? :o) Would love one exactly the same! Please let me know……. Thks xoxo

  27. Would you mind sharing the dimensions of your mirrors? I’m trying to figure out what size I should use for a double vanity ? Thinking the ones I got might be too big. Thanks!

  28. Hi the wayfair link to the wall sconce brings me to a single light sconce. Did wayfair used to have a double one but don’t at the moment? 🙁

  29. Hi Jillian, Love your bathroom! Can you please share with everyone where you found the little bathroom stool. Did you have it custom made? Would appreciate a response! Thank you! xoxo

  30. I love everything about this space! We have the same marble tiles and noticed that we were having issues with cleaning them. I found the perfect solution; fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water and spray it on the grout. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then use a scrub brush to wipe clean. You can also keep a bottle on hand in the shower to keep mold and mildew from growing on your bathroom tiles and grout!

  31. So soft and serene, beautiful job! I’ve fallen in love with the white ring dish in your linen tower. Can you please share where I can find this?

  32. Hi Jillian,

Your hime is just beautiful! Was wondering what finish you chose for your wall and trim paint?……i always struggle with that.

Look forward to hearing from you,

    Lesley

  33. Hi! I am renovating my bathrooms. Can I ask what sink you chose from Kohler? That is the exact shape & size I am looking for! Thanks! 🙂

  34. Love your bathroom! I’ve been looking for flooring tile like that, do you know where I can get those in the states, I live in Arizona and see Olympia Tile is in Vancouver.

  35. Do you know the name of the floor tile you used in the master bathroom? I see it’s from Olympia Tile but was their a name/color?

  36. Love your house!!! Can you please post the colour of your vanity? I’m ordering the same counters and love the way yours looks.

  37. I love the tub ? you ended up with~ especially the hardware you chose~ the inspo pic’s faucet was a little too frou-frou for my tastes ??

  38. Hi! LOVE LOVE LOVE this tub! I’ve been stalking the MTI Parisian 2 online but can’t afford it, and found your blog (also love!!) via google image lens! I’ve never sleuthed so much for anything! I tried your Wayfair link…it just brings me to a generic cover page of the site. Would you mind telling me what the model/male is of the tub? I have a hunch it’s the Solitude 70” by Storm Living, but I don’t want to make a mistake on such a YUUUGE purchase!! Thank you!! Will be reading you religiously from now on!

  39. Hi Team Jilly! I’m in Ontario, building a custom home, and due to Covid all the tile stores were closed, only leaving samples out front to pick up. So I ordered the same shower tiles as Jillian’s ensuite! My tile installer is so nervous to put the 3X12 oriental white marble on the shower ceiling, he doesn’t want to use the polymer glue for fear of turning my tiles yellow and is going to try the white cement, but is nervous it won’t work. Do you know how the tile installer did this in Jillian’s shower, or if there was any issue?
