I get LOTS of questions about the window coverings in our home so today I thought I would give you ALL of the nitty-gritty details on where I get them from, why I chose to go custom and what exact window treatments we have in each of our rooms!!
So, grab yourself a coffee … and a snack … because this is a long one with LOTS of info!!
Why We Decided to Go Custom:
To be honest, I never really understood the power of custom drapes until we decided to get them for our current home. I would always see custom drapery in other homes and I always thought it looked amazing but I never realized just how much of a difference they make in a home until we had them installed in ours.
Custom window coverings make the space look soft and feel bigger and elongated! They really are that “finishing touch”, they help frame the home and add that little bit of luxury! Also … not only do they look good but they’re functional as well! You can get blackout shades in any room in your home where you may need a little extra privacy or darkness!
Keep in mind, custom drapes are a bit of an investment but they really aren’t something you will be changing up often! You’ll more than likely have them in your home for 10-15 years … or even longer!! So in my humble opinion, they’re worth the money!!
Where We Got Our Custom Window Coverings:
All of the window coverings in our home are from Q Design! I first heard of Q Design through a fellow blogger and friend, Monika Hibbs! I have always loved Monika’s style and eye for design so when I found out her drapes were made by a local Canadian company, I knew right then and there I wanted to give them a try for our home!
Q Design is truly one of those good ‘ol family-run businesses, they are super accommodating and helpful, they pay attention to the smallest of details and are quick to fix something if it isn’t just right!! I remember finding out that their family dog passed away and we sent them flowers because I felt like I had such a connection with them and it’s exactly that feeling I love so much with small local brands!
Here Are Some Tips When It Comes to Window Coverings:
- When there is a window or sliding glass door in a room with only a few feet on either side, I make the rod go wall to wall! This helps create the illusion that the entire wall is windows even though it’s not!
- I usually have my drapes go from floor to ceiling to help elongate the space!
- Stick with light colours (unless you’re going for a bold statement!) as this will keep your space looking more classic and timeless.
Here’s How We Ordered Them:
It’s all done online!!! The process was actually super easy as you can price everything out ahead of time if you know what you need but if this is your first time or if the whole thing just seems like too much for you, their expert drapery stylists are more than happy to walk you through it over the phone and by email to get what you need (for free!). All you have to do is take the measurements and fill out the online form with the specs to ensure you get a perfect fit. Once you fill out your measurements they send you fabric swatches and you choose which one you like the best (they’ll even send you 5 for free)! Their drapes are all fully lined in either cotton or blackout lining at no extra charge.
All of Q Design’s pricing is in Canadian dollars (great savings for the US buyers!!) and shipping is always free for both Canada and continental US on almost every product they sell. They also just don’t do drapery and shades either … they can also custom make bench seats, toss pillows … and shower curtains like we have in our home!!

Thank you! Love when you share all the details :).
Love all of the drapes! Great post. Could you tell me where you got the floating wood shelf in your guest bath in the last photo?
It was custom made for us by Carson from Urban Roots Furniture! xo
Your window coverings look beautiful and your space is inspiring. Do you have any suggestions for using floor length curtains when there is base board heater directly under the window?
This is amazing! We are at the end of rebuilding since we lost our home in the Fort McMurray Wildfire! I have no clue about drapes or blinds but I know I want white and bright!! Am I reading correct that your drapes are all the same color! I am so stuck on white and thought it was too much but I’m loving it! I hope they ship to Fort McMurray, AB!
Looks great, Jillian! Thanks for sharing! PS- Chuckled at ‘rumpus’ room. Do people still say that? Haha My grandma used to call it that when I was a kid. ?
Oh I am bookmarking this for future use, thanks so much!
I love all of your window coverings! They are beautiful. Once quick question: How tall are your ceilings? We have 8 foot ceilings and I am trying to decide between the 6″ and 4″ pleats. Thank you!
I agree.. custom is the way to go. I did custom drapery in my condo and everyone thought I was crazy! But the look is fab and I would not do it any other way. It has a finished look that boxed curtains don’t have.
Nice post with great cool photos that look fabulous. Thanks for sharing
How high are most of your ceilings?
Loved the tips! Do you know the mark of this wallpaper? I need the room of my baby that is on the way.
I really like the vibe. Everything seems so connected. Each color and the way the house is built is so connected. So beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Jillian! Are your Roman shades flat style and romans? They’re beautiful!
So – no blinds at all? What is your advice about whether or not to do blinds with curtains, and why did you forego them? Thanks 🙂
I just love the romantic look of drapes!! xo
I was curious if you have the manufacturer name for the square alcove tub in the picture with the custom gingham shower curtain? Happy Easter!
I always loved custom made curtains over the readymade curtains. I have recently moved to Dubai Marina apartment this time I have used wooden Venetian blinds and self blackout curtains for my windows. They look just cool. The contrast between wooden Venetian blinds and curtains just made my day. I have enjoyed this article a lot. Thanks for these awesome tips.
