Kale Romano Strata

For the next two weeks Iโ€™m participating in the #ToscanaTasteOff and Iโ€™ve created some awesome recipes using the new Villaggio Toscana. Get your kitchens ready and freezers empty … you will be making this Kale Romano Strata all winter long. I kid you not, I made this THREE times in one weekend, that’s how big of a crowd pleaser it is in my family!!! Not to mention that it is so easy to whip up in advance or to even make two and freeze one. I always cook with thick sliced Italian bread, because it always tastes and turns out better when it’s baked. This time I tried using the new Villaggio Toscana with olive oil and it was SO soft and fresh. The natural olive oil flavour complemented my Italian inspiredย strata perfectly.

Try the new Villaggio Toscana for yourselfย …ย get your coupon here!! Follow my easy steps below and be the crowd favourite at every brunch all winter long.

Ingredients:
6 cups of Villaggio Toscana, cubed
6 large eggs
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 white onion diced
2 cups of fresh kale
1 cups finely grated romano
1 cups finely grated white cheddar
1/2 cup finely grated parmesan
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 tablespoon dijon mustard
1 teaspoon sea salt
ยฝ teaspoon black pepper

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
2. In a sauce pan, warm olive oil, onions and garlic until translucent. Add kale and soften slightly.
3. In a separate bowl whisk together eggs, buttermilk, mustard, salt and pepper.
4. Toss bread and cheeses in a large bowl and place in a deep baking dish. Pour kale mixture and then egg mixture over Villaggio Toscana. Bake at 375 until golden!

    1. I mixed it right in with my kale mixture … I took it out the second time that I made it and I actually like it better …. I just forgot to take it out of the ingredients (OOPS!!!!)

  1. Your ingredient list says 112 cup of buttermilk… Is that right? Also, directions say to place bread and cheese mixture in bowl, then layer kale mixture then cheese on top but it looks like your assembled dish is tossed with the bread… Can you please clarify or be more specific? And the bacon part seems to be missing from the instructions too. Sorry to be the nitpick pain but I want to make sure I make this dish right! Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. View the video – it is very brief. The recipe is onscreen and it is 1/2 Cup of buttermilk. The assembly of the dish is shown, too. I think the bacon could be sprinkled on top of the bread layer or mixed in with the kale. From the photo it appears that a bit more cheese was sprinkled on top at the very end of the baking time or just as it came out of the oven. The very top cheese is not browned just partially melted. It probably isn’t necessary but makes for an appetizing photo. Also, the touch of cheese sprinkled on top lets your guest know that cheese is an ingredient which might not be apparent in the finished dish – although most recipes for Strata include it!
This response is so long no one will read it!

      1. Thanks for the reply Libby! I always love getting replies and esp the long ones lol. I just wish Jillian could have been a bit more careful about the instructions as it’s still not entirely clear whether I do two layers with all three items (bread, kale mixture and egg mixture) or just once per her instructions. This would result in a different dish. I’ve never made strata before so the key is in the details! Thanks again for replying though and it was helpful.

        1. SORRY Nancy!!! I ended up taking out the bacon the second time that I made it and I liked it better … I forgot to take it out of the ingredients. The 1/12 was a typo … oops (Thank you Libby for noticing). We’re not all perfect!!!! XOXO

          1. Thanks for the reply Jill! I know I can be a pain with details :S but keep the recipes coming as they are delish!

  2. Thanks for posting this recipe and video. It looks delicious. I took the liberty of responding to a few queries above. I always enjoy your recipes and Fraiche Nutrition, too.
