Hello everyone, Erin here! What says I love you more than sweethearts for your sweetheart?! Valentine’s Day is such a fun time of year to try something sweet and super cute! These DIY Valentine Sugar Hearts are not only so adorbs, and perfect to make for Valentine’s Day, but they are SUPER easy, too! Serving these beside coffee makes for a fun conversation starter, or how about gifting a cute little bag of them tied in a bow – hello, GALentine’s gifts!

These sugar hearts are wayyyy easier than you think they might be, and only need three ingredients: sugar, colouring, and water! Yep, that’s it! They are also a little temperamental because when you cut out your shapes, the only thing holding your sugar in place is water, so they can crumble if you aren’t careful! That said, they set really quickly, and will harden into shape in about 30 minutes! I made them in three colours just for the pretty factor (ombré all the way), but you can make them in your own fave shade!

Ingredients for each colour batch:
½ cup white granulated sugar
gel food colouring
1 – 2 tsp water

Tools:
Parchment paper
Rolling pin
Bowls
Fork
Tiny heart shaped cutter

You’re going to mix this up in three batches, so get your three bowls (cereal or soup bowls are perfect for this!)

Measure ½ cup sugar into each bowl, and using a toothpick, apply your gel colour (trust me, a little goes a LONG way!)

In bowl number one, apply no colour at all (this is for your white sugar hearts). In bowl number two, add a little of your colour, and in the third bowl, a little more.

Mix up your bowls of coloured sugar using a fork and then add water to each, one teaspoon at a time. You’re going for a damp sandy texture, with enough moisture so the sugar clumps together, so if you need a little more water, go ahead and add it in.

Starting with your white mixture, pile the mixture onto parchment paper, and press down firmly with your hands or a rolling pin to about ¼ inch thick (thicker hearts will hold together a little more solidly!)

Using your heart shaped cutter, (after searching high and low for the perfect tiny heart shape cutter, I got mine on Etsy, and it’s the perfect size and format for these little cuties), cut out your shapes one by one, placing on another piece of parchment paper where they can dry and harden up. Trust me, you’re not going to want to touch these until they harden up… I learned the hard way!!!

Move on to your other bowls repeating the same process – this is a great time to listen to your fave podcast, lol.

    1. Hi Devon! Actually, it’s suuuuper fast to cut them all out once you get a rhythm going! I would say to make a good whack of them, it would take about 20 minutes or so. Enjoy!!! XO

  2. If you knew how much I love hearts! I’ve already ordered the heart cut outs, I won’t receive them in time for this Valentines, but pretty soon I’ll be stamping my “heart” out. Thanks for a wonderful post Erin!
