My 5 Secrets to Beautiful Hair

Hi everyone!! Today is all about my 5 secrets to beautiful hair and while I’m not particularly keen on the way my locks look right now (these damn bangs are making me look like an 80’s rocker) the products, tools, and tricks below have definitely helped save my butt when it comes to my dry, frizzy mane (especially during this time of year) and have also helped me tame my Farrah Fawcett wings. Let’s take a look at my tips and tricks below …

Hair Masks

I love treating myself to a good hair mask from time to time, especially when I notice my hair is starting to feel dry and look a bit dull, to me this means that I’m in desperate need of a good deep hydrating condition and it’s exactly what I give it with a good mask, leaving my locks shiny and super soft!! However, one thing I’ve learned (the hard way … LOL!) about hair masks is that you HAVE to make sure to follow the directions on the package!! Some hair masks have proteins in them and leaving them on your hair for longer than outlined in the instructions can actually damage your hair. So, if the package says to leave the mask on your hair for 15 mins DO NOT leave it on all night … I’ve definitely done this before (lesson learned!) and it left my hair so dry and felt terrible after! I won’t be doing that again! LOL!

Scrunchies

Yes. Scrunchies are back in and I cannot imagine my life without them!! They are the easiest (and cutest!) way to toss your hair up in a quick messy bun and they don’t leave that dreaded kink in your hair like those little elastics do! Plus, they come in a variety of colours and patterns so you can mix up your look! I mainly wear mine around the house or when I’m out running errands but you can actually dress up your look with a cute scrunchy and a messy bun! These babies are here to stay!

High-End Blow Dryer

This is a serious MUST and so worth the price tag. I know that this can seem like a scary purchase at first as quality hair dryers can come with a bigger price tag but they’re honestly worth every dollar. Not only do they last so much LONGER than the cheaper ones but they also save you TIME (which this mama needs) and they typically come with more temperature control which helps to help protect your hair as they low heat you can use (in the shortest amount of time) is best!! I’m absolutely in LOVE with the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer for a few reasons, it drys my hair so fast, it’s QUIET and lightweight and it comes in a few different colors, but my fave is their white/silver colour combo … obviously! LOL!

Ps. You can snag this hair dryer online at eBay for 20% off, check out the deal here!  Actually, I just found out that 81% of the items eBay carries are brand spankin’ new and most of the products are listed as “Buy Now” so you don’t have to keep your eye on the bidding process … unless you prefer the thrill of it! ? AND right now they have a Hair Care promo going on, click here to check out the deals! PLUS they also have an Early Spring Coupon for 20% off, here! You’re welcome … ?

Avoid Washing Your Hair Daily

Washing your hair every single day strips your hair of its natural oils which leads to dry hair and more breakage, plus, it also dries out your scalp!! This is no bueno in my books (I need all the help I can get with these locks of mine!) so I try to go as long without washing my hair as humanly possible but I end up washing it on average, about every second day. The longer you can go without, the better!

Invest in Quality Shampoo and Conditioner

There’s nothing better than finding a shampoo and conditioner that make your hair feel (and smell!) AMAZING!! My current favourite combo is the Davines Nounou Shampoo and the Davines Melu Conditioner! This combo leaves my hair feeling so nourished and silky smooth!!

  1. Have you tried the Kenra platinum blow dry spray?! I swear using that before blow drying along with brushing my wet hair with a tangle teezer have made my hair so much healthier over the last few years!

  2. Hi Jillian…For frizzles, static, dry colour treated hair I use It’s A 10 leave in spray conditioner. It gives my fine hair body, shine and softness and I am hooked on it. Great post as everyone has hair issues. I LOVE your robe! Are you done with bangs (gorgeous both ways) or just looking for a change?

  3. I got the Dyson blow dryer a couple months ago and I swear it is worth it’s weight in gold! That being said, $400 for a blow dryer IS a lot, but I was lucky (thanks Ulta reward $$ and 20% off coupon) to get mine for under a hundred dollars! I also swear by the Color Wow line of products, particularly the Dream Coat….this girl with natural curly hair, who prefers to wear it straight-ish, but lives in horribly humid Houston has found Dream Coat to be the holy grail of hair products!

  4. I used to wash my hair every 2nd day, but now, twice a week! I have a curly bob, put product on daily and blow dry daily! Much less wispy, dry ends!

  5. Hi Jillian … every two weeks I use vo5 hot oil treatment and like you I use a good Shamppo right now I’m using Pureogy ….love it … a tad pricey but a little goes a long way !!

    Love following you ?

  6. I also try to go as long as I can without washing my hair… (maybe a little too long some days) but Batiste dry shampoo is literally my best friend!! A quick little spray at the roots around my face and I’m good to go.
What are your favourite and go-to hair masks?? I’ve tried some at home DIY masks but I haven’t found one that I love yet.

  7. Currently my fave is DevaCurl No Poo original hair cleanse!!! My hair has seriously never felt better!! Check it out!!

  8. I usually go 4 days between hair washing! I found Monat and it has changed my hair and life so much so that I decided to buy into the business! My hair is much more shinier, smoother and hydrated. I just used the Replenish Masque last night and the results are unreal. Also, Monat products are gluten free, animal cruelty free and vegan!

  9. The day(s) after I wash my hair, I wear it in a scrunchie or elastic at bed time and in the morning it’s got great bounce and fullness and a little flip at the end of my hair.

  10. I’ve started washing my hair in cold water. My grandmother, 94, has gorgeous silky hair- she gave me the tip!
I know, cold showers, yuck.. but it has actually really helped with the dryness and breakage!

  11. Great post! Jillian, you need to try Kerastase haircare if you haven’t already. There is even a natural organic line called Aura Botanica if that is something that is super important to you! In March we will have a new shampoo which would be so perfect to nourish and hydrate your dry locks!

  12. Hi Jillian,

I use extra virgin coconut oil 1x/week and leave it on for 4 to 8hrs, before washing it off. This saved my hair after so much damage and it also smooths things out if you have a frizzy maine like me.

In addition, I also believe it’s important to follow a hair chronogram (days of the week/month which you dedicate some time to do your hair masks/apply certain products/etc.)

I usually wash my hair twice a week, so for example…on Fridays I do a deep conditioning and Tuesdays I do the coconut oil mask. Whenever I have to wash my hair more often, I give it some extra love by using Pantene’s 1-3minute wonder ampoules and Keratin ampoules.

Lastly, I try to limit my usage of hot tools/blow drier to once a week. Always use heat protection hairspray before styling and, try to keep the dirt/oiliness somewhat under control with Dry Shampoo on days I don’t wash it. A trim every 4-5months also helps 😉

My hair is nowhere near ideal (under my standards) to what a beautiful hair should look like, BUT it is it’s HEALTHIEST and the STRONGEST that it has ever been, since I started doing the things mentioned above about 3 years ago.

Sending you lots of love…I adore you and your beautiful family.

    Xxo

  13. literally cannot live without my Chelsea King scrunchies!! Definitely going to treat myself to a hair mask and check out some quality products! Total hair envy Jillian

  14. My balayaged hair loves it when I put some hair oil into my hair and go to sauna (northern girl 😉 ) and then wash them as always, with a quality shampoo + conditioner. The result is absolutely perfect afterwards, silky smooth and shiny – i dont even straighten them then! Love it!
P.S. Love you and your journey and your family and your sincerity and everything about you!

  15. Regular trims keep your hair feeling & looking great! Using quality hair products is a must for healthy hair, visit your local stylist.

  16. Heya Jillian. Loving the blog big time! Would love to see a blog post on your go to hairstyles/updos if that’s possible 🙂

  17. Hi Jill! Huge fan here from NY. I love your hair lately. Can you share what you have done to it recently? Balayage? Face framing highlights? I am going to my hair appt tmrw and looking to do something like yours. Thank you!!!!! ????

  18. Love love love your hair!!! Do you still use the Davines shampoo & conditioner? Do you put anything in your hair before drying, mousse/gel? I was using monat products for a few years but I didn’t renew my membership. I like to switch every once in a while.

  19. I love the Orofluido hair mask – it has changed my dry hair to really healthy feeling. I also have the Dyson hair dryer and LOVE IT 🙂
